Health Note: Not a Vet Visit

Animal Wellness publishes general information about dog and cat health. Please read this before relying on anything on the site.

This is not veterinary advice

Nothing here is a diagnosis, a treatment plan or a substitute for an examination. We are not vets, we have not seen your animal, and two pets with the same sign can need very different care. Decisions about your pet’s health, medicines, vaccines, parasite control and diet should be made with a veterinarian who knows your animal.

Never medicate at home on the strength of a web page

Many human medicines, including common painkillers, are dangerous to dogs and cats. Do not give any medicine, supplement or home remedy unless a vet has told you to. Do not try to make your pet vomit unless a vet or poison helpline tells you to and explains how.

In an emergency

If your pet is having trouble breathing, has collapsed, is having a seizure, may have eaten something poisonous, or you are frightened by what you are seeing, contact your vet or the nearest emergency clinic straight away. Call ahead if you can. For suspected poisoning, a vet or an animal poison helpline in your country can tell you what to do next.

Rules differ by country

Vaccines, parasite risks, approved products and legal requirements vary between countries and regions. Our guides describe general principles only.
